Costa Mesa is a multicultural city located in Orange County. The city currently hosts a population of 113 440 people within its 16 square miles. The Pacific Ocean is located a mere mile away from the cities southern border. Costa Mesa was incorporated in 1953 with a population of approximately 16 840. Originally, the cities economy was dependent on semi rural farming but as the city has grown, it has come to rely more and more on retail commercial business as well as action sports industries, such as skateboarding, snowboarding, and surfing. Los Angeles is located roughly 37 miles northwest from the city. San Diego is 88 miles south and San Francisco is 475 miles north. Other cities that are close by are Newport Beach, Irvine, Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, and Santa Ana.
The city has a variety of well maintained amenities, including three libraries, two golf courses, and over 25 parks. It is also home to 20 public schools and the post secondary institutions Orange Coast College, Nation University, Vanguard University, and Whittier Law School.
There are several buildings that cater to the arts in downtown Costa Mesa, such as the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall and Theater, South Coast Repertory Theater, and the Orange County Performing Arts Center. The largest mall in the city, the South Coast Plaza, is home to over 320 stores. It creates some of the highest volume of sales out of regional shopping centers in California.
The five story high Costa Mesa Civic Center covers 9.5 acres and is where the administrative functions of the city takes place. As well, the Council Chambers, Communications, Police Department, and Fire State No. 5 can be found here. The centre can be found at 77 Fair Drive.
It is very convenient to get to the city, with the state highways 55 and 73 running through it as well as the Interstate 405.
It is quite easy to find something to do around the city. For those to like to explore or take in the sun, there are several beaches, mountain ranges, and high/low deserts close to Costa Mesa. Those who are interested in a more urban experience can head to Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, Palm Springs, and Los Angeles (which is home to a variety of sports arenas and major league teams).
